Well, where did those 16 months go?
I truly did hit the ground running when I began my journey as a Community Exercise Professional for Let’s Get Moving at Oaklands Surgery on Canvey Island, and I have never looked back.
Over the last 16 months I have met 227 amazing participants. To say that I have been overwhelmed by their determination, resilience, dedication, friendliness and kindness would be an understatement. I have truly met the nicest people ever and it comes with a very heavy heart to be saying goodbye. I am going to miss them all deeply.
I have thoroughly enjoyed helping everyone on their journey to living an active life, and what a journey it’s been. We have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions: we have laughed together, cried together, encouraged e
ach other, and overcome challenges we didn’t think possible. Everyone’s journey to being more active has been different, and I am very proud of each and every one of them.
There have been numerous success stories and many Movers of the Month amongst the Canvey participants. The resilience that the participants have shown – especially in the face of adversity – has been outstanding.
Our relaxed and informal weekly meetings held at The Paddocks in Canvey have been a roaring success. They were even record-breaking in numbers, which I put down to the fantastic camaraderie within the group. Each week we covered different topics and tips, and we shared lots of information and encouragement. The sessions gave participants an opportunity to meet others on the same journey and share their experiences. The different characters of the group meant that everyone brought something different to the table, which made a very special and unique group. Every week it was guaranteed that the room would be filled with laughter – especially if the legendary participants’ tongue-in-cheek humour and innuendos were on top form!
We all encouraged one other to try new things in our quest to stay active. The Let’s Get Movers tried a vast array of different activities, with the majority always up for trying something new. We celebrated National Fitness Day with an outdoor gym session at Kismet Park on the Island, some participants joined the Get into Golf campaign last year and are still golfing on a regular basis, and earlier in the year the group even started up a short mat bowls afternoon at the local football club. Friendships have formed and it’s great to see participants embarking on the next chapter of their active lives together.
Some of the participants have even embraced technology and joined our Canvey Let’s Get Movers Facebook page and Whatsapp group! All so that we can stay in touch and continue to support one another in the future.
