Well, I had a message from my surgery, and didn’t really know much about it but I’m always keen to keep moving so I took them up on it. I like to keep as active as I can. I’m 72 and I used to belong to an Ace walking group as I tend to do a lot of walking in the summer time, virtually from the time the clocks change I do a 2 hour walk every day. I also go to a Zumba class which I enjoy very much and a yoga class. I used to be a nurse and am very much a believer in ‘if you don’t use it you lose it’, so my motivation was keeping active and with the group sessions it’s nice to have the company.
What did you enjoy most about Let’s Get Moving?
Oh, I enjoy all of it, it’s just lovely. I haven’t really thought about what I enjoy most as there’s nothing that I don’t like about it. The social aspect of the group is great and Jackie’s positive attitude is really motivating. It’s great at the group sessions, when we do little exercises, everyone can go at their own pace they’re not pushed into anything. We’ve done a bit of yoga in the sessions and there’s a seated option for those who can’t stand so they can still benefit.
Has there been an increase in your physical activity?
Yes, definitely, just doing the tasters in the group sessions has been an increase in my activity. I was already doing yoga and Zumba before Let’s Get Moving but now I go from my Zumba class to the session and walking there is definitely added activity!
Have there been any additional positive outcomes, e.g. self-esteem, energy etc?
Well, it does make you think positively about things. When I finish the class I feel energised, Jackie puts exercise in a positive light! It has also made me think more about movement so I’m more aware of what I can do, for example Jackie has told us about exercises we can do at home. I have six grandchildren and I used to take them on holiday a lot, but now I don’t as much and I’m not working so it can be easy to just forget about activity or think ‘oh I can’t be bothered’ but this keeps it in your mind.
How did the Community Exercise Professional help to achieve the changes made?
Talking things through, was really helpful. Jackie makes you feel motivated and she makes you think ‘yes I want to do that’. Just her general attitude, she’s very positive and makes you feel you’ve done well after the group sessions. It’s not just me who thinks this, other people in the group have said the same.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Jackie has mentioned walking groups and so some of us in the group are going to have a chat next week and look at what’s around. I’m the type of person who if I’m sitting in the armchair, which isn’t often, I still stretch my legs out and move my ankles so Let’s Get Moving has been lovely!
